In a recent marketing course on product management, our professor recommended that we take a look at Gartner’s ‘Hype Cycles’. They factor in quite well with my line of work at UHG – technology product development and even better with the work on the Roundtable. When you’re developing new products, regardless of whether it’s disruptive or sustaining, it’s important to recognize the velocity of innovation. The Hype Cycles align fairly well with the diffusion of innovation, but includes the slope of enlightenment – an odd time in a product lifecycle when a new generation of companies/products takes the technology and squeeze out more revenue. So, what can you learn? First, recognize that it may take a while to get new innovative technologies moving forward in the marketplace, second, there may still be a few old ideas you can convert into new products.
